The fonds consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, and briefs of the Alberta Co-operative Union.
The Alberta Co-operative Union was formed in 1947 for the purpose of coordinating the activities of cooperative enterprises in Alberta; educating the public on the advantages of cooperative economic organization; and advocating for legislation supportive of the cooperative sector. It was affiliated with the Co-operative Union of Canada. In 1958 it suspended its activities. It was a predecessor of the Farmers' Union and Co-operative Development Association, which formed in 1959.
The records were retained by Doug Thornton, an employee of UFA Co-op and member of the Alberta Co-operative Union Board of Directors.
The file contains letters to Doug Thornton concerning arrangements for meetings and activities, and Norman Priestley's retirement; and circular letters concerning taxation, Co-operative Union of Canada 1956 congress, cooperative education, survey of members, and suspension of activities.
