Administrative History
William McCartney was born in Belfast, Ireland, and immigrated with his family to Vulcan, Alberta. He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1946 he joined the U.F.A. Central Co-op as an accounting clerk, and by 1954 he was appointed manager of the Farm Supply Division of UFA Co-op. In 1964 he was appointed General Manager. Around 1983 this title was changed to Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Bill McCartney retired in 1984.
