Item consists of a photograph: b&w, portrait of Premier Herbert Greenfield of Westlock.
Administrative History
Herbert Greenfield homesteaded at Edson and served as the vice-president of the United Farmers of Alberta from 1918 to 1921. In 1921 in the midst of a severe southeastern drought and a farm debt-crisis, he became Alberta's first UFA premier. Greenfield negotiated the return of control over mineral rights from the federal government to the province in 1925; Prime Minister Mackenzie King stalled the transfer however. Greenfield was plagued by illness and personal family loss throughout his premiership and resigned from the legislature in 1925. Premier John Brownlee later appointed Herbert Greenfield as Agent General for the Province in London, England, where he served until 1931.
