In 1913, the UFA Constitution was amended to admit women into the organization, and in 1914, the women assembled with men at the Annual Convention. In 1914 a Women's Section was formed, and was soon known as the United Farm Women of Alberta (the UFWA). The UFWA was the primary voice for public health, women's property rights and education in rural Alberta. UFWA locals brought their issues to the UFA convention, who in turn sent resolutions to the provincial government. Both the UFWA and the UFA lobbied the govenment for womens' suffrage which resulted in Alberta women gaining the right to vote provincially in 1916. The establishment of a Department of Public Health, provincial health nurses and a public school curriculum were among the many initiatives of the UFWA.
