Scope and Content
The series consists of directories of the Directors and Delegates (1964-1998), a document on the functions of Delgate Advisory Committees (ca. 1980), biographical information forms on Directors and Delegates (1963-1999), photographs of Delegates (1992-1999), presentations made at Director/Delegate meetings (1979-2001), minutes of Delegate Advisory Committee meetings (1980-1989); and correspondence and maps regarding Delegates' and Directors' geographical constituencies.
Administrative History
The United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative is governed by its Board of Directors. Its trading area was originally divided into 7 (later, 8 or 9) Districts, each represented by a Director elected from among its Delegates. Each District was divided into 5 (later, 7) Sub-Districts, each represented by an elected Delegate. In 2008 the number of Directors was changed to 12, elected at large, and the number of Districts was changed to 43, each represented by one Delegate. Delegates participate in the Annual Meeting and in regular Director/Delegate meetings. Since 1966 delegates identified members from within their district to act as advisors and hosted Delegate Advisory Committee Meetings, later called Advisory Council Meetings (after ca. 2000) for their constituency. The meetings provided two-way communication between members and management. Delegate and management reports were presented to the delegates. Originally the chairman and secretary were chosen by the committee members, later, the delegates took responsibility for chairing the meetings. The Information Services department, later called Public Relations, and then named Member Relations, oversaw the management of these meetings.

Includes the magazines The United Farmer and Alberta Farm and Ranch. Includes correspondence regarding Canadian Co-operative Implements Ltd., Farmers' Union of Alberta, and Camp Goldeye. Includes photographs, moving images, and electronic records.
Administrative History
The United Farmers of Alberta (U.F.A.) was founded in 1909 and incorporated by the Province of Alberta in 1918. In 1932 it established a subsidiary, U.F.A. Central Co-operative Association Ltd. (U.F.A. Central Co-op), to provide wholesaling and other services to local and regional farmers' consumer co-ops. In December 1948 U.F.A. changed its name and revised its Bylaws in order to function as a cooperative business, United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd. (UFA Co-op). The advocacy and educational functions of U.F.A. then merged with the Alberta Farmers' Union to form the Farmers' Union of Alberta. UFA Co-op took over most of the functions of its subsidiary UFA Central Co-op, which dissolved in 1966. In 1952 the management of most of the grocery and general merchandising cooperative outlets in the province was transferred to Alberta Co-operative Wholesale Association, which later merged with Federated Co-operatives Ltd. UFA Co-op then concentrated its marketing efforts in two areas: petroleum products and farm supplies. Petroleum products were initially supplied by Maple Leaf Petroleum Inc., and distributed through a network of local co-ops and agents. In 1957 the Co-op purchased Maple Leaf, and by the 2000s, the Petroleum Division consisted of a network of about 110 locally-managed Petroleum Agencies primarily serving the agriculture industry and rural communities. The Farm Supply Division entered the retail market in 1954, and expanded through amalgamations with local and regional co-ops. By the 2000s there were about 34 Farm and Ranch Supply Stores offering a wide range of products and services to agricultural producers, including animal health services and construction of farm buildings and mechanization systems. In 2008 and 2009 the Co-op acquired two groups of outdoor sporting goods stores which operate as a non-co-operative business in western Canada and the northwestern United States. Committed to enhancing the agriculture industry and the rural way of life, UFA Co-op sponsors a Community Investment program which provides scholarships agriculture students and grants to youth groups such as 4-H, as well as activities such as stock shows, rodeos, and amateur sports. The Co-op is governed by a Board of Directors, elected from among Delegates, who are in turn elected by the customer/members of local districts of its trading area. The series consists of correspondence and reports of senior management of the Petroleum Division, including statistics on petroleum sales, 1940-1986; retail location site profiles produced by the Engineering, Environment & Safety department; memoranda announcing appointments of new petroleum agents ; and photographs of the tank panting program administered by the Petroleum Division.
Administrative History
The Petroleum Division of United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative had its origins in 1935, when U.F.A Central Co-operative Association Ltd. entered into an agreement with Maple Leaf Petroleum Ltd. for supply of petroleum products (fuel oils, lubricating oils, and greases) to local co-ops. Maple Leaf Petroleum was a subsidiary of Imperial Oil Ltd., and it dealt exclusively with local agents of the Co-op. The agents were sometimes local co-ops, but more frequently were small family-owned businesses. Local agencies included service stations, gas bars, and bulk plants (small tank farms, from which fuels were trucked to farmstead tanks). In 1957 UFA Co-op purchased the assets of Maple Leaf Petroleum. In 1984 it introduced fully automated retail petroleum outlets known as cardlocks.
