Scope and Content
The file includes: proposed constitution of Edmonton Consumer's Co-operative Limited; Annual Report (1943); lists of members to who purchased Maple Leaf Petroleum products and amounts of their dividends and share equity (1943-1951); extracts from minutes of UFA Co-op concerning membership shares, etc. (1949-1950); correspondence concerning commissions paid to Edmonton District Farmers' Co-op as an agent of U.F.A. Central Co-op (1944).
Administrative History
An organization called the Edmonton Consumer's Co-operative Ltd. started around 1935, but it is not known whether it became operational. The Edmonton District Farmers' Co-operative Ltd. was founded in 1938. It expanded rapidly and within a few years was dealing in farm supplies, feeds, groceries, general household goods, insurance services, and petroleum products (through a network of agencies in Edmonton and surrounding rural points). It was affiliated with U.F.A. Central Co-op and later with UFA Co-op for purposes of marketing Maple Leaf Petroleum products. It was also affiliated with Alberta Co-operative Wholesale Association. Sometime between 1947 and 1951 it was renamed Edmonton Co-operative Association. J.R. Love was its manager.

The fonds consists of the constitution and bylaws, minutes, annual financial reports and other documents of the Wetaskiwin Co-op Refineries Limited, and the constitution and bylaws of Wetaskiwin U.F.A. Co-operative Association Limited.
Administrative History
In 1916 several United Farmers of Alberta locals in the Wetaskiwin district organized a bulk goods purchasing consortium, the Westaskiwin District Association of the United Farmers of Alberta. In 1917 it was incorporated as the Wetaskiwin U.F.A. Co-operative Association Limited. In 1931 it established an oil refinery, but apparently it was not capitalized enough to operate on a competitive scale. In 1936 Wetaskiwin Co-op Refineries Limited was incorporated for the purpose of manufacturing and dealing in petroleum products. It never succeeded in building a refinery, but in 1937 it opened a fuel outlet in Wetaskiwin. In 1999 its assets were transferred to the UFA Co-op.

Notes
Born in Scotland, Gardiner settled in the Excel region of eastern Alberta in 1909, raising grain and purebred horses. Two months after arriving, he joined UFA, and became active in political affairs. In the 1921 federal election, Gardiner was elected Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat with the UFA backed Progressive Party of Canada party; he became the house leader of the UFA caucus. He was relected in 1925 and then again in 1926 as a candidate for the United Farmers of Alberta. As a politician, he lobbied for the retention of the Crows Nest Pass Agreement and led an investigation into corruption in the hydro industry. In 1931, while still in parliament, Gardiner was elected UFA president. Defeated in the 1935 federal election, Gardiner presided over UFA's departure from politics in 1939. Known for his fairness and impartiality Gardiner turned the organization from politics to advocacy and marketing. He died shortly after retiring as UFA chairman in 1945.
