Scope and Content
The fonds consists of four issues of the Grain Growers' Guide (1909-1913), a blank farm account book (published by Grain Growers' Guide, 1922), and a promotional notebook (ca. 1960).
Administrative History
United Grain Growers Ltd. was formed in 1917 from the amalgamation of the Grain Growers' Grain Company (founded 1906) and the Alberta Farmers' Co-operative Elevator Company (founded 1913). It was headquarted in Winnipeg and had operations across the Prairie region. It was a producers' co-op specializing in marketing grain, but at various times it was also involved in publishing; marketing livestock and specialty crops; and retail sales of farm supplies, coal, feeds, fertilizers, and agricultural chemicals. Its publishing subsidiary, Public Press Ltd., published the Grain Growers' Guide (established in 1908 by the Grain Growers' Grain Company, renamed Country Guide in 1928). In 1992 it became a publicly-traded corporation. In 2001 it acquired Agricore (a corporation formed in 1998 from the amalgamation of Alberta Wheat Pool and Manitoba Pool), and was renamed Agricore United. In 2007 it was acquired by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. The new firm was named Viterra Inc.and expanded to become a multi-national agri-business.
