Scope and Content
The series consists of correspondence and budgets relating to UFA Co-op's Community Investment program; and thank-you correspondence, printed programs of sponsored events with promotional adverstising, and photographs documenting its contributions. The materials were mostly created or collected by the Member Relations department.
Administrative History
Local cooperatives and petroleum agencies provided financial support to community activities as early as 1937, when the Maple Leaf petroleum agency in Cereal, Alberta provided uniforms with hand-made patches for the Cereal Maple Leafs, a women's baseball team. As UFA Co-op prospered in the late 1980s, it began to allocate increasing budgetary amounts to its charitable program, known as "Community Investment". The program was administered by the Member Relations department. Delegates were also allocated budgets to support charitable causes of their choosing. Among other things, UFA Co-op supported scholarships for agriculture students, 4-H and other programs for rural youth, livestock shows and competitions, farm safety day camps for children, rodeo and chuckwagon organizations and competitors, horse teams that participated in local parades, children's and youths' sports teams in small communities, and medical research.

An organization called the Edmonton Consumer's Co-operative Ltd. started around 1935, but it is not known whether it became operational. The Edmonton District Farmers' Co-operative Ltd. was founded in 1938. It expanded rapidly and within a few years was dealing in farm supplies, feeds, groceries, general household goods, insurance services, and petroleum products (through a network of agencies in Edmonton and surrounding rural points). The series consists of letters, news clippings, reports, radio addresses, convention reports, resolutions, and a canvassers' workbook from the Farmers' Union of Alberta. It includes documentation of the 1951 controversy, when some former U.F.A. members of the F.U.A. Board demanded the expulsion of former A.F.U. members who were considered to be Communists.
Administrative History
The Farmers' Union of Alberta (F.U.A.) was formed in January 1949 from the amalgamation of the advocacy and educational functions of the United Farmers of Alberta with the Alberta Farmers' Union. The United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd., meanwhile, had been formed in December 1948 through the renaming and restructuring of the United Farmers of Alberta. The leaders and senior staff of UFA Co-op maintained close ties and interlocking leadership with the F.U.A. in its early years. The F.U.A. amalgamated with the Alberta Federation of Agriculture in 1970 to form Unifarm.

The series consists of correspondence and reports of senior management of the Petroleum Division, including statistics on petroleum sales, 1940-1986; retail location site profiles produced by the Engineering, Environment & Safety department; memoranda announcing appointments of new petroleum agents ; and photographs of the tank panting program administered by the Petroleum Division.
Administrative History
The Petroleum Division of United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative had its origins in 1935, when U.F.A Central Co-operative Association Ltd. entered into an agreement with Maple Leaf Petroleum Ltd. for supply of petroleum products (fuel oils, lubricating oils, and greases) to local co-ops. Maple Leaf Petroleum was a subsidiary of Imperial Oil Ltd., and it dealt exclusively with local agents of the Co-op. The agents were sometimes local co-ops, but more frequently were small family-owned businesses. Local agencies included service stations, gas bars, and bulk plants (small tank farms, from which fuels were trucked to farmstead tanks). In 1957 UFA Co-op purchased the assets of Maple Leaf Petroleum. In 1984 it introduced fully automated retail petroleum outlets known as cardlocks.
