Administrative History
Henry Wise Wood was a successful farmer in Missouri prior to moving to the Carstairs area in 1905. He was president of the United Farmers of Alberta 1916-1931, president of the Canadian Council of Agriculture 1917-1923, and president of the Alberta Wheat Pool 1923-1937, which he also helped found. Wood was a strong proponent of class organization believing that it would enable cooperation and the ability to take economic and political action. He advanced the social and economic conditions of rural Albertans, and supported the recognition of women’s rights. Henry Wise Wood joined the UFA through his membership with the Canadian Society of Equity. He assumed the Presidency of UFA in 1916 after the death of James Speakman. Wood became known for being the most dynamic farm and social leader of his day. When UFA formed the government in 1921, Wood declined the premiership, preferring to remain UFA president.

Description: Fonds consists of constitutional documents and By-laws; programs, reports, and proceedings of annual conventions; financial records; general correspondence; records of regional U.F.A. political associations, party advocacy pamphlets, correspondence and newspaper clippings; U.F.A. and non-U.F.A. bulletins, pamphlets, and reports; issues of The U.F.A newspaper; and biographical information on U.F.A. leaders.
Administrative History
The United Farmers of Alberta (U.F.A.) was formed in 1909 from the amalgamation of the Canadian Society of Equity and the Alberta Farmers Association. It was incorporated by an act of the Province of Alberta in 1918. It was a self-help and advocacy organization which encouraged economic power for farmers through the development of co-operatives. It also functioned as a political party from 1919 to 1939, and was the governing party in Alberta from 1921 to 1935. Its presidents were James Bower (1909-1911), W.J. Tregillus (1912-1914), James Speakman (1915), Henry Wise Wood (1916-1930), Robert Gardiner (1930-1945), and George E. Church (1945-1949). In 1914 a Women's Section was formed, and in 1916 it was reorganized as the United Farm Women of Alberta. In 1919 a Junior Branch of the U.F.A. was organized to support the activities of young members of farm families. The U.F.A. Provincial Political Association was formed as a vehicle for organizing political campaigns, and existed from 1919 to 1939. The U.F.A. Limited, incorporated from 1928 to 1949, published the organization's newspaper. The Co-operative Committee of the U.F.A was formed in 1930, and it was incorporated as the U.F.A. Central Co-operative Association Ltd. in 1932, to serve local consumer co-ops as a wholesaler and distributor. At its 40th annual convention in December 1948 the U.F.A. changed its name to United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd. (known as U.F.A. Co-op and later branded as UFA), and amended its Bylaws to allow it to take over most of the functions of the U.F.A. Central Co-operative Association Ltd. In January 1949 the U.F.A. advocacy function amalgamated with the Alberta Farmers' Union to form the Farmers' Union of Alberta.

Fonds consists of financial reports, annual reports, and bylaws pertaining to the Alberta Co-operative Wholesale Association, as well as speeches and pamphlets related to A.C.W.A.’s attempt to amalgamate with the UFA.
Administrative History
Alberta Co-operative Wholesale Association Ltd. (A.C.W.A.) was incorporated in 1928 by several local consumer co-ops, for the purpose of improving efficiency through large-scale purchasing and warehousing. In 1938 it reorganized, and was owned by 9 local co-ops. It expanded rapidly, and by 1951 it managed 56 co-op stores by arrangement with their local boards of directors. By 1958 it managed over 100 stores. It dealt in groceries, hardware, dry goods, lumber, coal, petroleum products, fertilizers, feeds, and farm supplies. The A.C.W.A. was headquartered in Edmonton, and J. Russel Love was its President from the 1940s to 1961. Negotiations to amalgamate A.C.W.A. with UFA Co-op were undertaken in 1958, but was unsuccessful due to differences in strategies and financing structures. In 1961 it amalgamated with Federated Co-operatives Ltd. (FCL), a wholesaler operating in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Custodial History
Records were collected by officers of United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative who attended A.C.W.A. annual meetings.
