Federated Co-operatives Ltd. (FCL) was formed in 1928 to provide services to local consumer co-ops in Saskatchewan. In 1944 it amalgamated with Consumers Co-operative Refineries Ltd. (founded 1934 in Regina) and in 1955 it amalgamated with Manitoba Co-operative Wholesale Ltd. A further amalgamation with Alberta Co-operative Wholesale Association in 1961 resulted in an organization active in a territory from northwestern Ontario to British Columbia. In addition to its wholesaling, warehousing and marketing services to co-ops, it operated retail outlets, sawmills, a coal mine, a petroleum refinery, petroleum exploration properties, feed mills, a fertilizer plant, a chemicals complex, and Western Co-op College. It was headquartered in Saskatoon.
The items were collected by officers of UFA Co-op who attended annual meetings of Federated Co-operatives Ltd.
The file consists of two pamphlets published by Federated Co-operatives: "What does Co-op mean? : an explanation especially for the new member", and; "Discounts or not? : should co-ops meet the farm fuel discounts or hold the line?" The latter pamphlet includes a workbook to assist local co-ops with their membership campaigns.
The fonds consists of the Society's newsletter for 1944 and 1947-1951.
In March 1944 a group of five UFA Co-op employees began publishing a monthly staff newsletter, provisionally titled You Name It?? By 1946 the newsletter was titled UFA Sco-ops, and it was the official organ of the U.F.A. Staff Co-op Society. Doug Thornton of the Educational Department of UFA Co-op served as its editor during most of its history. The Society organized social and recreational activities and produced the newsletter. In 1949 the Society's name was changed to U.F.A. Co-op Staff Society and the newsletter's title was changed to Sco-ops. In 1951 the Society disbanded and the newsletter ceased publication. A later staff social and recreational association known as ECHO (Employees of the Co-op Head Office) existed from the 1970s onward.
