Notes
Irene Parlby became involved in women's organizations in 1913 when she was appointed secretary of the Alix Country Women's Club. One of her accomplishments in this role was the founding of a local library; she had solicited the books from a newspaper advertisement and friends in England. In 1915 Irene and other members of the Alix club went on to establish the first United Farm Women of Alberta (UFWA) local in Alix. A year later Irene Parlby became president of the UFWA and then in 1919 became the first woman officer of the United Farmers of Alberta. In her inaugural report as a member of the UFA Executive Mrs. Parlby stated: "Neither men nor women know everything; women know many things that men do not know, men know many things that women do not know. Men and women together know everything that is known." In 1921, she was elected to the provincial legislature as a member of the UFA and appointed Minister without Portfolio in the new UFA government. She was the second woman in Canada to become a provincial cabinet minister. Irene Parlby was also one of the "Famous Five", the group of women who worked for suffrage, property rights and the right for women to be legally judged as "Persons" in Canada. In 1930 she was became one of three Canadian delegates to the Assembly of the League of Nations. Mrs. Parlby retired from politics in 1935.

Notes
Herbert Greenfield served as the vice-president of the United Farmers of Alberta from 1918 to 1921. In 1921 in the midst of a severe southeastern drought and a farm debt-crisis, he became Alberta's first UFA premier. Greenfield negotiated the return of control over mineral rights from the federal government to the province in 1925; Prime Minister Mackenzie King stalled the transfer however. Greenfield was plagued by illness and personal family loss throughout his premiership and resigned from the legislature in 1925. Premier John Brownlee later appointed Herbert Greenfield as Agent General for the Province in London, England, where he served unitl 1931.

Scope and Content
John Edward Brownlee (1884 -1961) was born in Ontario and moved to Alberta to work with the Calgary law firm of Lougheed, Bennet, Allison and McLaws in 1909. In 1912 he was admitted to Alberta Bar and went on to become the solicitor for the UFA. In 1921 he refused the post of premier but accepted Brownlee's offer of the position of Attorney-General. John Brownlee was appointed Premier of Alberta on November 23, 1925 following the resignation of Premier Herbert Greenfield. Under Brownlee, the Legislature became much more efficient. So much legislation was passed that the government was labelled the "UFA Steamroller." In 1929, Brownlee completed the final negotiations with Prime Minister Mackenzie King to transfer control of natural resources from the federal government to the province and Alberta gained the right to determine and realize the potential of its forests, coal, oil, gas and rivers. In July of 1933 a civil law suit for the alleged seduction of an 18 year-old woman was brought against Brownlee. The allegations were never definitively proved one way or another, but Brownlee's reputation was ruined. He resigned from office on July 10, 1934.
